Steam Boiler Startup Procedure

Sequence the steps for cold startup of an industrial fire-tube steam boiler after annual inspection and maintenance.

1Fill boiler to normal water level using treated feedwater and verify on sight glass

2Light burner on low fire and slowly raise temperature (limit 100°F per hour to prevent thermal shock)

3At operating pressure, test each safety valve by raising pressure to pop point

4Complete pre-startup checklist: verify all manways closed, safety devices reinstalled, stack damper open

5Purge firebox with air for minimum 4 furnace volumes per NFPA 85

6Perform bottom blowdown to remove settled sediment, then surface blowdown

7Test low-water cutoff by slowly lowering water level — verify burner lockout

8Transfer boiler to automatic control and verify all safety interlocks are functional
